Natural-Looking Lip Filler: How to Get Fuller Lips Without the "Done" Look

Natural-looking lip filler comes from three things: the right product, a conservative amount and an injector who respects your natural lip shape. The goal is lips that look hydrated, balanced and fuller, not lips that walk into the room before you do.

What lip filler can do

  • Add gentle volume to thin or thinning lips
  • Improve balance between the upper and lower lip
  • Define the lip border
  • Smooth fine "lipstick lines" around the mouth
  • Restore hydration and softness

Choosing the right filler

Allied uses the Juvéderm® collection of hyaluronic acid fillers. For lips, softer products such as Volbella® are popular for subtle results and fine lines, while Ultra and Ultra Plus can add more noticeable fullness. Your injector picks the product based on your anatomy and the look you want. Learn more on our dermal filler page.

Why less is more for a first treatment

Starting conservatively lets your lips adjust and lets you see how you feel about the change. It is easy to add a little more at a follow-up, and gradual changes tend to look the most natural. Bring a photo of your own lips from a few years ago, or examples you like, so your provider understands your goals.

What the appointment is like

Most Juvéderm® lip fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine, and many clients also use a topical numbing cream first. The injections usually take 15 to 30 minutes. You will see results right away.

Swelling and recovery

The lips swell more than other areas, and swelling is usually most noticeable for the first one to three days. Small bruises are possible. Your final result is easiest to judge at about two weeks.

  • Use a cold compress for comfort.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and hot tubs for 24 hours.
  • Don't press or massage your lips unless your injector asks you to.
  • Plan treatment at least two weeks before a wedding, photos or a big event.
  • If you get cold sores, tell your provider beforehand, since treatment can trigger an outbreak.

How long lip filler lasts

Because the lips move constantly, lip filler usually doesn't last as long as filler in the cheeks or jaw. Many clients plan a touch-up within a year. Read our guide on how long dermal fillers last.

Frequently asked questions

Does lip filler hurt?

Most clients find it very manageable thanks to numbing cream and the lidocaine in the filler.

Can lip filler be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by a trained provider if needed.

How much does lip filler cost?

Cost depends on the product and amount. New patients get $199 off their first syringe of Juvéderm®, and members save $50 to $100 per syringe.
