GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide help with weight loss by reducing appetite, slowing digestion and helping you feel full sooner. They work best as part of a medically supervised program that includes nutrition, activity and regular check-ins, and they aren't right for everyone.
GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after eating. GLP-1 medications mimic it, and tirzepatide also acts on a second hormone called GIP. Together, these effects can lead to:
In clinical trials, many people lost a meaningful percentage of their body weight over months of treatment, with results varying from person to person. Lasting results depend on building healthy habits, and many people regain weight after stopping, so your provider will talk about a long-term plan.
GLP-1 treatment is generally considered for adults with a higher BMI, or with weight-related health concerns. It is not appropriate for everyone. For example, these medications are not recommended during pregnancy or for people with a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers. Your provider will review your full health history, medications and goals, and may request lab work.
Mild nausea, fullness, reduced appetite and changes in digestion such as diarrhea or constipation are common, especially after a dose increase. These usually ease over time. Your provider will start low and increase gradually to keep side effects manageable, and will tell you which symptoms need a call right away.
Some clients add IV therapy or B12 injections for extra support. Our sister integrative clinic in the same building also offers nutrition counseling, physical therapy and functional medicine. See integrative health care.
Everyone is different. Weight loss is usually gradual, and your provider will set realistic goals with you.
Many people need ongoing treatment or a maintenance plan to keep results. Your provider will discuss options.
When prescribed and monitored by a medical provider, GLP-1 medications have a well-studied safety profile. Supervision helps manage side effects and catch problems early.
